Marvelous
Magic Monday
I’ve talked
before about how ballet technique is based on illusion. Here’s another way to
think about it. Every magician appears to create magic onstage. But he/she is actually
doing a well rehearsed, scientific, specific, illusion. So is a ballet dancer.
Understand
the science and you will better understand how to perform any step. Dancers who
think they can “fake it”, and learn just by watching are misinformed. They are
also easy to spot. Creating balletic illusion is every bit as technical and
difficult as any magician’s trick. Dancers must learn their own “tricks of the
trade”.
For example,
the torso is still and stable most of the time. The arms and legs work from
there, but along very specified, but simple, movement tracks. Watch a child
imitating a dancer and you’ll see their arms go everywhere. In other words, the
patterns of movement appear more
complex than they are. Illusion.
The next
time you are tempted to tune out in a ballet class, think again. You may miss a
big magical secret.
