Mad Monday Earlobe Line

Mad Monday Earlobe Line

The distance between the earlobes and the shoulders is always the same. If you took a ruler and measured it, the number would be the same no matter what step or port de bras is being performed.

Tricky areas are port de bras, cambrés, and especially grand battements. For some reason the shoulders want to nestle up next to the earlobes when the leg is kicking. Hmmmm.

This rule is simple because the only exceptions would be choreographic ones – Swan Lake, perhaps. Or if a choreographer wants the dancer to shrug or move the shoulders up for some reason.

Measure your earlobe line and keep it constant!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #1vvv:
“Keep the distance between the earlobes and the shoulders constant.”

You have two eyes, and two ears, but only one mouth. This is so because you are supposed to look and listen more than you talk.”
