Here we are in the
middle of the week, and it seems like a good time to talk about spirals. I’ve
talked a lot about two-way energy (and more), but there is a different type of
energy required for certain things.
For example, in an
attitude derriere, or in a turn in this position. In any derriere position the
body is balanced around a central (imaginary) pole (see previous
blogs). Therefore, the energy isn’t as straight up and down as it is in most
other steps. Instead, it is a spiral.
That’s right. Just like a spiral staircase or a corkscrew, the energy pattern
moves more like a spiral than an arrow (as an example, see today's Link of the Day).
To demonstrate this,
take a towel, wring it out (figuratively), then hold it vertically. In this twisty
towel position, dancers can see what
a spiral should look (and feel!) like.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret # 58g:
“To
demonstrate a spiral of energy, wring out a towel.”
Link of the Day:
Quote of the Day:
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize
this, and you will find strength.”
