Wondrous Wednesday Plié Power
A plié is the superhero of ballet technique. It has amazing
powers, not only to propel steps, but also to cushion landings. But it also has a power for blending. That’s right, by combining its two
superpowers of pushing and cushioning, we get a third: blending.
The ending of a step in plié is the beginning of the next
step, if everything is working together correctly. That’s why dancers are
always thinking one step ahead. But it is easy to double plié, as I blogged
about last week, or to use a weak plié, etc., especially if a series of steps
is difficult and/or unfamiliar.
The best way to clean and hone a series of steps that are
problematic is by focusing on the pliés. Stop worrying about that triple turn
and turn your attention to the plié that propels it. Is it your best, and most
efficient plié? Could it be wider, deeper or more hydraulic? These are all
things I've blogged about before.
Focus on the pliés, hone them, and the steps that follow will often take
care of themselves.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #2r:
“Whenever a series
of steps is a problem, focus attention on the pliés in between.”
