Mad Monday Gravity Statute
Yes, it is time for a Monday Statute. Here it is: There is no on/off
switch for gravity. At least we don’t know how, at the present time, to turn it off.
This is probably a good thing. If it could be turned off dancers and everyone else
would just float around the world. It would create a whole new set of problems –
and undoubtedly a whole new dance technique.
But because we can’t turn it off, we must constantly resist
the downward pull of gravity with our own upward pull. For dancers this is a
constant thing: if you are dancing, you are resisting. It is as though we have
the on/off switch on our body. Ready to dance? Switch it on. It stays on until
you are no longer dancing at which time you are permitted to turn it off.
Unfortunately, there is a tendency to forget this upward
force and that’s when it would be nice if we really did have a switch located
on our body. So until then, just imagine flipping the “pull up” switch as soon
as you step into a classroom.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #26:
“There is no on/off switch for gravity.”
