Negative thoughts. You know how damaging they can be, and
yet they seem to creep into our brains no matter how hard we try to lock them
out. I’ve talked before about focusing on the positive, and this idea is heard
so often today that it almost (sadly) becomes meaningless – blending into the
background chatter in our heads.
Well, enough! Thinking positively is as much of a habit as
anything in our dance technique, and we all know how to develop good dance
habits. Practice, practice practice. The same way a musician gets to Carnegie Hall
(old joke).
We practice eliminating negative thoughts by replacing each
one that pops up with a positive one. And we do this as immediately as
possible. If the though is: I am terrible
at pirouettes, replace it with …my
pirouettes are getting better …; and/or, use a thought that focuses your
mind in another, more practical direction:
I will plié more before each
pirouette…
It isn’t easy. But we don’t study dance (or anything, for
that matter) because it is easy. We do it because we love the challenge and the
accomplishments associated with it. It is the same with changing your way of
thinking. Practice changing the chatter in your head to more practical, and eventually more positive,
thoughts.

“Stamp out negative thoughts with practical ones.”
