Sensational Saturday Statute
Ahhhh, those lovely, useful, all-purposed pliés! A step that
can do almost anything, and yet is so horribly underappreciated and
under-utilized. And that’s too bad.
A plié must be deep and rich to be used to its full
potential. A wrinkle in the tights isn’t enough, but so often that’s all that
happens. Sad.
Think of a plié as something that goes on forever – it never
stops. It just keeps deepening until you cannot go any deeper. The only time a plié isn’t full and deep is
during bourrées, since the knees are relaxed to allow for the movement. And relaxed knees are a rarity in classical
ballet.
So beware of the dreaded wrinkle in the tights. The only
time you should see it is in bourrées.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #28:
“A wrinkle in your tights does not qualify as a plié.”
