Sunday Silence
Most of us live in a world of constant noise. Whether it is
traffic, conversation, trains, planes, cell phones, computers, or just a perpetual background buzz, we
are so accustomed to it that we are no longer aware of it until we find
ourselves in a quiet place. There is a cultural difference here too. In western societies we use speech to clarify
our thoughts and ideas, whereas in many eastern cultures this is considered a
distraction to thinking.
But everyone needs quietness. Silence helps us turn off the
internal dialogue that can be a hindrance to happiness and creativity and silence
allows us to relax and reflect.
Whether you consciously build a corner of quiet into your schedule,
or whether quietness just happens doesn’t matter. But practice does. Make silence
a habit and carve out your own peaceful place for it. This quiet time and place
can be for meditation, reflection, creating, or simply observing. A wonderful
side-effect of silence and relaxing the mind is an increase in creativity.
So seek some silence this week. It is therapeutic. No prescription is required
and the side effects are great.
