Wacky Wednesday Ears
Sometimes it helps to focus on one
particular part of the body for a day, or during a class. One surprising area
that is a good point of focus: the ears.
Lifting from the ears helps keep the
body properly aligned - as opposed to lifting from the chest, or the shoulders,
etc. For correct positioning of the head, think of one ear leaning toward the
shoulder for an incline, and for a turn of the head, the ears should be
perpendicular to the shoulders. For an arabesque allongé, think of the ear being next to the arm in front.
These are just a few ways the ears can
be used to help technique – you can probably think of others. Another way the
ears are important is for listening – really
listening – to the music. It’s often difficult to think about the music
when your mind is so riveted on technique, but try to do it anyway. Music is
the salve that soothes and facilitates everything you do in class and makes it
more fun and enjoyable. It helps your brain too!
Of course, using the ears for listening to
the teacher and/or director is the obvious use!

Quote of the Day:
“You have
two eyes, and two ears, but only one mouth. This is so because you are supposed
to look and listen more than you talk.”
