Mad Monday Ups and Down
A rather vexing problem I frequently see involves the
position of fifth en haut (high fifth). When the arms go up, the ribs always want to
have a part of the action. So as the arms go up, the ribs go out. Not good. The
only place for spare ribs is at a barbecue restaurant.
Part of solving this dilemma involves using the abdominals,
because it is difficult to poke the ribs out when this muscle group, or "the
core", is fully engaged. The other part is simply remembering Ballet Secret #6tt: When the arms go up, the ribs go down.
Any time the arms are moving upward, the ribs should be
providing an equal and opposite energy downward.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #6tt:
“When the arms go up, the ribs go down.”
