Throwback Thursday Bending Over Backwards
Born in 1905 Hoosick Falls, New York, Harriet Hoctor was a
dancer who became famous in the Zeigfeld Follies and in the movies, appearing
with such notables as Jack Benny, George Jessel, Bill Robinson and George and
Gracie Allen.
Harriet Hoctor was trained as a ballet dancer and began her
career in minstrel shows and in vaudeville.
She also appeared on Broadway.
She performed in “Dying Swan” at Rockefeller Center in 1932. She danced until
the late 1940s when she opened a ballet school in Boston where she taught until
1974. She died in 1977.
Harriet Hoctor is probably best remembered for her ability
to bourrée on pointe for great distances while in a complete backbend.
