Sunday Hungry
Dancers and dance teachers often talk about someone being “hungry”. This term is used in other professions and
areas, too. It means a person who is
determinedly going after his or her goals.
Think about how it feels when we are really, really hungry for food. Maybe we missed a meal, or worked out to the
point of being famished. That feeling,
that hunger, is the way we should feel about whatever goal we have set for
ourselves, whether it is in dance or something else.
Dance can be a brutal taskmaster, and anyone who wants to
make dance their profession needs to be hungry. Really
hungry. It’s as simple as that. If
you aren’t hungry enough, you won’t have the drive to push through all the
obstacles. But if you have that hunger,
that overwhelming desire – then that’s where you need to go, because you simply
can’t go or do anything else. Your
hunger will let you know that you are on the right path.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Motivational Secret #8:
“To succeed in the
dance world, you have to be hungry for it.”

“It seems to me we
can never give up longing and wishing while we are still alive. There are
certain things we feel to be beautiful and good, and we must hunger for them.”
