Technical Tuesday Gluteus Maximus
The largest and most superficial of the three muscles that make up the buttocks, the gluteus maximus is responsible for extending the hip and for allowing humans to maintain an upright posture (due to its large size). Other primates have much flatter hips and thus are unable to stand upright for long periods.
For dancers, the gluteus maximus acts upon the pelvis, supporting it – especially when balancing on one leg. The lower part of the muscle assists in the external rotation of the thigh – Turn-out anyone?
It is most powerful when it allows the body to regain an upright posture after stooping down by drawing the pelvis backward (assisted by other muscles).
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Anatomical Secret #119:
“The
gluteus maximus is the main extensor muscle of the hip.”
