Sunday Fear or Focus?
Motivation is an interesting thing. There are several ways to motivate someone else or yourself, and some are better than others.
For example, fear is great motivator. Unfortunately, over time it makes the person more likely to do something because they want to avoid something else (a penalty, a reprimand, etc.). Therefore it makes a dancer focus on what not to do, rather than what to do.
Incentives are great motivators, too. Winning awards, privileges, or even money, can work well – but only short term. As time goes on the incentive loses its power, requiring more and greater incentives to produce the same level of motivation.
Obviously, we need something better. And here it is: motivation through purpose and focus. Dancers that have long term goals will stay motivated longer and be more positive on a daily basis. They understand where they are heading and what they must do to get there. This takes more time and energy, but it is the only way to produce motivation long term. And, as we all know, dance training is a long-term operation!
Make sure you are motivating yourself through your focus, not your fear.
