Wacky Wednesday Sponge
Consider the lowly sponge.
It comes in a variety of shapes, and may be made of natural or synthetic
materials. But all sponges have one thing in common: they absorb. Not only that, but they absorb a lot!
You know where I’m heading.
When a dancer arrives in class she/he needs to prepare herself (or himself) to
be a sponge – absorbing every little detail in the class. But here is the
important part: a dancer does this without
judgement (i.e. “I don’t think that matters”, or I don’t think that
applies”, or “I don’t want to do that today”). Often dancers fall into the trap
of selecting, or editing out those things they find uncomfortable, or
confusing. Not good. I am assuming that this dancer is studying in a place
where she/he trusts the teachers and the system. If the dancer doesn’t then she/he
shouldn’t be there.
So not only should dancers
be a sponges, they need to be non-judgmental
sponges.
