Marvelous Monday Shapes and Pathways
Ballet technique is made up of a series of shapes and
pathways. Beginners learn the correct shapes
– the curve of the arms, the straight extension and rotation of the leg, the stretch
of the foot. All these things must be practiced and honed until each shape is
an almost unbreakable habit.
Now comes the really tricky part. The pathways the arms and legs follow are also prescribed and not
random. The arms can’t move just anywhere, nor can the legs. Thus, the
correctly shaped arms and legs now must move over these set roadways – always maintaining
their correct shape as they move. Whew.
And people wonder why ballet can be so difficult…
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #22ddd:

shapes and pathways.”
