Throwback Thursday and Joe Yule, Jr.
This week we lost a treasure of the American stage and screen – Mickey
Rooney (1920-2014). He was an extremely versatile character actor, but dancers
may know him best for his work in movie musicals. Mickey Rooney also proved himself as a
dramatic actor in such movies as Boys
Town and National Velvet, among
others. In 1944 he served in the
military, entertaining the troops in World War II.
His career began at age 2, as a part of his parent’s
vaudeville act. He went on to work in
early silent films and in 1937 he appeared in A Family Affair, the movie that introduced the popular teenage
character Andy Hardy. This character
appeared in 20 films and made Mickey Rooney a star. When he teamed up with Judy Garland in a
series of musicals, he became the first teenager to be nominated for an
Oscar. Their partnership created magic
onscreen in such movies as: Babes in Arms, Strike up the Band, Babes on
Broadway and Girl Crazy. His
career spanned nine decades, and in 1979 he performed with Ann Miller in Sugar Babies and was nominated for a
Tony Award.
At the time of his death, Mickey Rooney had three more films
in the works.
His real name was Joe
Yule, Jr.
