Bad habits. They can
be almost impossible to correct. That’s
why dancers are vigilant and constantly alert - to stamp out any that might
creep into their technique. Young
students often don’t realize how critical this is! Anything that becomes a habit has been
repeated so many times that it will feel normal, and that
is the scary part. When a student
attempts to correct the habit, the corrected pattern itself can feel wrong.
It’s just like a small fire.
If it is put out quickly it doesn’t become a raging inferno. But if it isn’t….
So think of “putting out” every small bad habit (fire),
before it becomes something that is almost impossible to fix. Any bad habit can be corrected, but the time, energy and repetition required is
often more than many dancers want to do.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret 7r:
“Stamp out small fires
(habits) so they don’t become big blazes.”

“It is easier to prevent bad habits than to break them.”
