Sunday Inventor
James Naismith wasn’t
a dancer; he was a Canadian physical educator.
During his lifetime he was an orphan, a high school drop-out, a lumberjack,
a medical doctor, a military chaplain, a coach and he earned four Doctoral degrees. Yet today few people know his name, although
he invented something that is hugely popular
now. He didn’t live to see the immense
popularity his invention achieved, nor did he actively seek recognition for it.
It made me think about the “why” in what we do. How many of us would do something every day
if we knew there would be no large external rewards? How many of us dance, write, or teach, etc.
without any thought of fame or fortune – or even recognition?
James Naismith was quoted as saying: “I owe the world more than it owes me.” He lived his life with the idea of leaving
the world a better place.
What did he invent? The
game of basketball.
