Wild Wednesday Bent Straw
A dancer’s constant quest is to increase their
extension. In an attitude devant, here
is a simple image will help. It is Secret # 18e.
The attitude leg should hinge from the hip joint to allow
for a higher leg position without distorting the correct alignment of the body. Imagine that there
is a glass filled with something delicious – like a banana smoothie or a
chocolate something - balanced on the working heel. A bent straw is placed in this drink, and the
heel of the attitude leg is lifted enough to allow the dancer to cambré
slightly forward and take a sip.
After the sip is taken, the body returns to its upright
position, but the newly established, higher, attitude position is maintained.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #18e:
“To increase extension in an attitude devant, imagine a glass of water
on the working heel with a bent straw in it.
Lift the leg high enough to sip the drink.”
