Fun Friday Feel the Floor
I’ve blogged before about the feet and the different images
a dancer can use to bring more awareness to what the feet are doing. But Ballet Statute #21 sums it all up: “Always
be aware of feeling the floor with the feet.”
It is as though the feet are as dexterous and expressive as
the hands. There should always be an
awareness of “feeling the floor” or “feeling contact with the earth”. Teachers express it in different ways, but it
all means the same thing: a feeling of
being in tune with gravity, and allowing gravity to ground and stabilize the
dancer. This helps provide needed
security, especially on pointe, when the contact with the floor is limited.
So feel the sensations emanating from the bottoms of the feet
and this will help you work as a partner with gravity.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #21:
“Always be aware of feeling the floor with the feet.”

“But it turns out that people who are
grounded and secure don’t change much under stress. That’s what being grounded means.”
