Fun Friday Secret Dimples
When the rotation of the femur in the hip socket is correct,
and the turn-out appropriate for the dancer has been established, an
interesting observation can be made.
Dimples! This rotation produces a
slight indentation on each side of the derrière – double dimples!
This can be a particularly useful image. Students can not only feel, but see their turn-out where it
originates, instead of using only the feet.
It is also helpful if observers are in the classroom and the teacher
doesn't wish to call attention to that area of the student’s anatomy when giving a correction.
Instead, a simple: “Show
me your dimples” will suffice. The
students will undoubtedly smile at this subtle, secret directive, and the
audience will see only a roomful of beautiful smiles!
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #3i:
“Correct rotation of the femur in the hip socket produces dimples in
the “cheeks”.
