Super Saturday Yawn
Yesterday I talked about being aware of the supporting leg
during stretches. Today I’m going to
discuss the importance of relaxing
muscles that are being stretched. Most
dancers know how important it is to make certain their muscles are warmed up
before trying to stretch them, but it is equally important that the muscles are
not tense.
This is most often a problem during cambrés or port de
bras. Since these steps often come at
the end of a combination, where the dancer has been working hard (hopefully)
and may forget to relax the muscles they were just diligently engaging.
As a relaxation reminder, imagine yawning (or as an
exercise, actually yawn) just before the port de bra. It is very difficult to remain tense and yawn
at the same time!
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #16l:
“In a cambré or port de bra forward, yawn at the beginning.”

Quote
of the Day:
“A new idea is
delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to death
by a quip and worried to death by a frown on the right man's brow.”
