Throwback Thursday and Henry Holt

Throwback Thursday and Henry Holt

Most accounts list Diaghilev’s dancers as the ones who brought ballet to America. This is beccause many of them settled here in the early twentieth century. And it’s true that they had the staying power and helped the evolution of ballet in the U.S. The most notable of these dancers was George Balanchine. But ballet in America goes back much, much earlier than that.

It was Henry Holt, an Englishman and dancing master, who staged the first touring ballet production in America. It was performed Charleston, South Carolina where Henry Holt had established a dancing school. The year was 1735! (http://michaelminn.net/andros/history/beginnings_of_american_ballet/index.html). One of the ballets performed was The Adventures of Harlequin and Scaramouch.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet History Secret #298:
“Henry Holt staged the earliest known ballet in America.”
