Wacky Wednesday Paper Doll
A saut de basque is an interesting jump.
It is relatively easy to do the impressive looking double saut de basque
because a full saut de basque, like a step-over (en dehors piqué) turn, isn’t really a full turn. By the time you are
up, you are already half-way around. Don’t you just love the illusions in
ballet?!
Anyway, a saut de basque has two major positions
that must be achieved: first, as the dancer jumps, the working leg is thrown (via battement) to
à la seconde as the dancer changes
to face upstage (in the air). Secondly, the leg in second is then brought quickly
to passé as the dancer rotates to complete the turn in the air before landing.
Therefore, think of two paper dolls: a
nice flat paper doll in an a la seconde position, and then another nice flat
paper doll in passé.
