Fun Friday Frenzy
During rehearsals I encourage my dancers to be aware of the
music, and really listen to it. It is easy to forget this seemingly obvious thing when concentrating on
the steps and formations.
The reason for this is twofold: first, it helps develop a habitual
flow of movement and support for the choreography (dancing looks best when it
appears to be part of the music); and two, it helps prevent the common problem
of speeding up when the adrenalin kicks in during a performance.
This acceleration is a frequent occurrence onstage and
dancers must consciously focus on staying on tempo, or even slowing down, to
prevent a frenzied pace in performance. A simple realization of this phenomenon
is often all it takes to maintain the proper musicality.

Secret #7jj:
“In performance, your tempo will tend to increase.”
