Wild Wednesday Punch
Yesterday I discussed brisés and said I’d talk later about
the proper position of the arms. Well,
it’s later!
The positioning of the arms for brisés is the same as it is
for a basic jeté: one arm is in fifth en
avant, the other in à la seconde, but the
body leans slightly forward and slightly to the side. It is this lean that makes this position
unique, and what provides the counterbalance needed for the steps.
Imagine being punched in the abdomen and use that
contraction to place the body in the correct position. In other words, it is a contraction (every
modern dancer knows this) with the body leaning slightly forward and slightly
sideways, but always with the feeling of “up and over”. For the ladies, it is like being “up and over”
the tutu.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #6u:
“ The distinctive position of the arms for many things including brisés
and jetés, is this: one arm is in fifth
en avant, the other in a la second; and the body leans slightly forward and
slightly side: as though having been punched in the stomach.”
