Saturday Rituals and Confidence
I’ve talked a lot about dancers, actors
and other performers and their superstitions and rituals. While some of these
behaviors may sound odd to say the least, these rituals can actually be
important.
According to https://www.banffcentre.ca/articles/actors-prepare-backstage-look-pre-show-rituals:
“Being on stage requires a shift from
your everyday mindset. These pre-show rituals are the touchstones that allow an
actor to comfortably make the transition from regular life to performance mode.”
Rituals provide a modicum of control in
an unpredictable environment. And being onstage is definitely an unpredictable place!
But rituals can give a performer more confidence, and that alone will likely
produce a better performance.
From the Big
Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Secret #188:
“Rituals provide a transition.”

make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is
the same.”
