Wacky Wednesday Habits
We are all very familiar with habits. In
dance we constantly hear about which bad habits we need to break and it is
challenging. We don’t hear as much about good habits and how important they are
in ballet training.
There’s a new book out that I want to
read by James Clear called Atomic Habits https://jamesclear.com/ . It sounds like
it might have some interesting ideas, especially for dancers (see the Quote of the Day below).
The Oxford Dictionary has several
definitions of the word habit:
“A settled or regular tendency or practice, especially
one that is hard to give up.” (Sounds like our bad dancer habits).
“An addictive practice, especially one of taking
drugs.” (Hmmm, another negative).
“An automatic reaction to a specific situation.” (This
could be good, but could be bad…).
Dance training,
through its daily repetition, hopefully produces automatic good reactions. Of course this requires that the repetition is done
well if not perfectly. That’s the problem. And that’s where all these blog ideas
and images come in – they are designed to help with a more perfect execution.
Happy (good) habit
making!
