Saturday Theater Cats
cats are welcome in a theater. There is
one exception, and that is if a cat walks onstage during a performance, thus
stealing the limelight. But other than that cats are welcome. This superstition
probably comes from a time when cats kept the theater free of mice and other
pests.
Some costumers say a garment isn’t
really complete unless a cat has slept on it, and in an odd twist, black cats
are said to be particularly lucky to have in a theater.
In England, the Gielgud (The Globe)
Theater had a famous resident cat named Beerbohm. Born in 1975, he came from a
long line of theatrical cats and was even given a title: Principal Mouser. His
portrait still hangs in the foyer. When he died in 1995 he received a
front-page obituary in The Stage.
