Fun Friday Lift

Fun Friday Lift

Often during (or after) a pas de deux, the male dancer offers his hand to his ballerina just before a supported promenade or something similar. Or, he offers his outstretched hand during their curtain call. Of course she accepts, and places her hand in his.

But, like most things in ballet it isn’t quite that simple. At no time should the ballerina just slap her hand down quickly into her partner’s palm. Instead, she always lifts her hand slightly before gently placing it into her partner’s hand.

This serves the practical purpose of assuring an effective grip, but it also adds a beautiful artistic moment of hesitation – allowing a significant glance or two between the two dancers. Ah….

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Partnering Secret #27h:
“The lady lifts her hand slightly before taking her partner’s.”
