Fun Friday Bath Mat Feet
The way the feet contact the floor in ballet varies.
Everything from a light, weight-over-the-balls-of-the-foot stance, to using the
feet to push firmly against the floor. It is important to understand when to
use each one.
The one I’m talking about today is the firm, energy-through-the-floor
position, (usually from fifth). This position is used as an impetus for jumps,
etc. Here, the bottom of each foot must contact the floor fully and firmly, like a bath mat with suction cups hugs the
bathtub.
All suction cups must make contact! This may only be for a
brief time, until the next step in the process happens, but for the moment
before the jump, the turn, or the relevé, all suction cups must embrace the
floor.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #20o:
“Imagine the bottoms of the feet as a bathmat with suction cups.”
