Super Saturday Coaxing Statute
Dancers are familiar with the phrase “follow the arms”,
which is intended to remind them to move their head when they move their arms.
Well, here is another one: imagine the arms coaxing the legs into position.
So often the arms and legs appear disjointed and separate
from one another. Instead, they should move together in some kind of synchronized
fashion, and the best way to think about this is that the arms “coax” the legs
into position.
Think of bringing the leg up to passé from fifth position.
The arms customarily move from fifth en bas to fifth en avant and this
movement makes it appears that the arms pull (coax) the leg upward into position.
This is an obvious example, but there are many others.
How many can you think of?
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #30
“Think of the arms coaxing the legs into position.”
