Technical Tuesday Suspenders

Technical Tuesday Suspenders

The peril in any plié is when we forget to maintain a constant lift upward and away from the floor. It is all too easy to let gravity take over and drop into the plié, allowing the weight of the body to sink or worse, to crash. And as we all know, there is no crashing in ballet.

One image that can be helpful is an imaginary fashion accessory: a brightly colored pair of heavy duty suspenders. These suspenders are attached from the tights to the ceiling, and provide the perfect amount of resistance for any plié.

Of course, your suspenders don’t have to be multi-colored, you can imagine them any way you desire.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #2q:
“When you plié, imagine wearing suspenders that are tied to the ceiling.”
