Technical Tuesday Turns
Here is another thought for better pirouettes. I've blogged before about pirouettes and what
makes them successful, like feeling as flat as a playing card, and using the plié
to its best advantage, etc. But today
the image involves the working knee – the one in retiré.
Of course the leg is fully turned-out, and it is this
position that helps the dancer remain stable; and in an en dehors pirouette, the turned-out position helps “lead” the
turn.
Picture the retiré knee, and imagine a light or a laser
positioned in the middle of the patella (kneecap). This light inscribes a perfect circle in the
air as the dancer turns.
If this circle of
light could be photographed like a time-lapse picture of headlights, wouldn’t
it be beautiful?!
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #14m:
“ Imagine
inscribing a circle in the air with the working knee when you pirouette.”

Quote
of the Day:
“A circle is the reflection of
eternity. It has no beginning and it has no end - and if you put several
circles over each other, then you get a spiral.
