Fun Friday Drill
Here is another helpful hint for successful pirouettes. I've talked before about energy and how it
should be equal and opposite during a turn – energy up and energy down. For some reason, the energy down is the one that tends to be
forgotten. This often causes the dancer’s
posture to lift backwards because all the energy is going in only one
direction.
So imagine the supporting leg as a giant drill bit, and picture it drilling through the floor during the turn – from the moment of relevé until
that little extra lift that begins the descent to the finishing position.
As you drill into the floor, don't forget the equal and opposite upward lift away from all that
drilling!
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #14n:
“Imagine the supporting leg “drilling” into the floor during
a pirouette.”

“There is no rule on how to write.
Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly; sometimes it's like drilling rock and
then blasting it out with charges.
