Sunday Small Miracles

Sunday Small Miracles

I just returned from the grocery store. As I was leaving, a kind customer offered to help me, and although I didn’t really need help, it reminded me how small miracles in life are all around us. The trick is to notice them.

During this holiday season that can be filled with stress and rushing around, remind yourself to pause and notice the small things. A person helping with packages, a kind smile from a stranger on a stressful day, the magical laughter of a child…if you look for these tiny gifts you will find them.

It’s all part of being grateful. I’ve talked about it before, but it bears repeating. Being grateful improves mood, and some studies suggest it makes you healthier and more likely to live a long life.

Notice the small miracles!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Motivational Secret #192:
“Notice small miracles every day.”

Saturday Murphy Statute

Saturday Murphy Statute

Most people are familiar with Murphy’s Law: If anything can go wrong it will, and at the worst possible moment.” I hesitate to apply it to dance, although I have seen occasional evidence of it.

There are, however, other versions of Murphy’s Law that happen a lot. Today’s  example is a case in point (no pun intended). The best balances you do will occur in your kitchen when you are alone.

This has been a subject of speculation among my dancer friends, since all of us have experienced this phenomenon. Perhaps there is something about the metal appliances? The small space? The smell of food? I don’t know. It is most likely because one’s own kitchen is a place where we relax and therefore are better able to achieve things. Essentially, it’s a worry-free zone.

Now, if we could just recreate that zone in the classroom…

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Statute #101:
The best balances always occur in your kitchen.

Quote of the Day:
“The place I like best in this world is the kitchen. No matter where it is, no matter what kind, if it’s a kitchen, if it’s a place where they make food, it’s fine with me. Ideally it should be well broken in. Lots of tea towels, dry and immaculate. Where tile catching the light (ting! Ting!)”

Fun Friday After

Fun Friday After

Here we are on the day after Thanksgiving, and the turkey is carved and eaten. Time to think about posture.

Earlier this month I talked about Ballet Secret #21ss: “Imagine carbonated bones.”  This image helps provide lift. Today’s idea helps provide the opposing downward energy: Imagine your muscles hanging from your bones. Not a very pretty image, I’ll admit, but an effective one.

The effervescent bones lift, and the muscles hang. There’s that two-way energy again!

Happy leftovers!

Secret #21tt:
“Imagine  muscles hanging on bones.”

Quote of the Day:
“The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.”
