Fun Friday Difficult

Fun Friday Difficult

Why is ballet so hard? This is a common question/lament from dancers. The answer, unlike ballet itself, is simple. It’s the level of detail required for even the most basic thing.

Take the picture above. All of the things needed to stand correctly in first position are listed. And that’s just a position – not a movement or set of movements. Whew!

Do the math. For every step and position that’s added, the level of detail increases. No wonder dance is both frustrating and compelling. It does feel wonderful beyond words when something you do works well!

My point is, take heart! Dance is a constant quest for a perfection we will never reach – but that’s what keeps us coming back. It feels so amazing when we get close!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #21uu:
“Ballet is difficult because of the level of detail required.”

“Everything you possess of skill, and wealth, and handicraft,
wasn't it first merely a thought and a quest?”
