Saturday Comb Superstition
Here is yet another superstition from
the backstage archives. If you should happen to drop a comb in the dressing
room, you must leave it for someone else to pick up. If you pick it up
yourself, it will bring bad luck. Hmmm.
This sounds to me like a made-up
superstition by someone who was basically lazy. But there is some history here
too. Dropping a comb while in the act of combing one’s hair by anyone (not just
theater people) was said to foretell upcoming disappointment.
Whether the comb dropping superstition
migrated from the masses to the theater or vice versa is a mystery.
