Sunday Push and Pull
Dancers often talk about being motivated, or maintaining
motivation. And it’s true, we all need motivation to do whatever it is we
must do in order to progress and develop. But how? How do we “get” motivated?
Motivation is often used interchangeably with inspiration,
but they are different. Dancers know they must take class daily and work hard
or they won’t achieve their goals. That’s the push, and whether they feel like it or not, they are pushed by the motive: the requirement to take class to get better technically. Motive/Motivation…you
get it.
Inspiration is something that touches you and makes you feel
excited, eager, driven, or gives you a
higher purpose. Inspiration is the passion that drives (pulls) you. The word
itself comes from the Latin inspirare
which means divine guidance.
Therefore, motivation is more external (push),while inspiration
is internal (pull).

Motivational Secret #109:
“Motivation is the push, inspiration is the pull.”
