Terrific Tuesday Turns and Cards
Sometimes turns can become warped – off center and off
balance. The body is, after all, a
rather rounded thing with lots of ways to become less than square and
flat. A twisted torso is a common
problem in pirouettes. One half of the
torso (usually the upper portion) moves around faster than the other half
(usually the lower portion).
To prevent the dreaded TT (twisted torso), imagine yourself
as a playing card. One that is from a
new deck, all shiny and crisp. Think
about how this playing card would look if it could spin on its short edge –
like a king of hearts doing a pirouette.
This is how your torso should be during a turn – flat and
crisp. No twisting , tipping, or otherwise
torqueing the position!
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #14l:
“Think of yourself being as flat as playing card when you
turn.”

“We
cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the game.”
