Marvelous Monday Springs
When bringing the foot to passé prior to a pirouette, it is
important that the foot arrive there quickly and efficiently. The path is straight – it does not pass “Go”
it does not collect “$200” (for those of you familiar with Monopoly).
To make certain the route is quick and sure; imagine having
a spring attached between your working foot and your knee. It is fully stretched when the foot is in
fifth or fourth position, but when the foot leaves the floor on its way to passé,
the spring retracts – boom! An instant
and direct delivery to passé!
So put springs into your pirouette preparations!
(On another subject – September is Classical Music Month!)
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #14k:
“Imagine that your
working foot is attached to your knee with a spring, so it will get to passé
quickly.”

“A
person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by
every pebble on the road.”
