Wacky Wednesday Teotard Crease
You will remember Ballet
Secret #1l: The “teotard” line is
where the leotard and tights meet at the front of the upper thigh. Then there
is Ballet Secret #16d: “Always maintain the “teotard crease” on
the working leg when in passé or a 90 degree à la seconde position.” Well,
today’s theme also involves that critical area of the teotard crease.
During a pirouette preparation, in fourth position, the leg
that is about to go to passé has a slight bend at the teotard line – this is
normal. When the dancer hits passé, however, this crease on the supporting side must
disappear. The teotard line must be
straight. This straightening (elongating) of the teotard line is critical
for proper alignment in a pirouette. If this straightening doesn’t occur, the
dancer’s pelvis will be tilted backward. (On the working leg (passé) side, the
teotard crease is present).
So imagine stretching the front of the supporting hip and
straighten the teotard line on that side as the passé occurs.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #14t:
“Remember to
straighten the “teotard crease” on the supporting leg when moving from fourth to
passé before a pirouette.”
