Wild Wednesday Pre-Pirouette

Wild Wednesday Pre-Pirouette

Promenades are handy little items. Not only are they beautiful on their own, they can also serve as great training wheels for turns. After all, a promenade is really just a slow, sustained turn.

Therefore, whenever you are working on perfecting any turn – from pirouettes to attitude turns to turns in second – start by doing the turn as a promenade. Begin from the preparatory position, move through the extension of the working leg and finally into the turning position itself. See the Link of the Day below for examples.

As an added bonus, doing it this way creates a level of comfort and helps overcome the “fear factor” that turns sometimes generate.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #14mmm:
“Practice promenades before any pirouette.”
