Terminology Tuesday Soar

Terminology Tuesday Soar

According to Gail Grant’s book Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet, the term temps plané [tahn pla-NAY] means time soared or a soaring movement.

Interestingly, the word plané in French means “flattened out” or “leveled off” a seeming contradiction to the balletic use. One cannot soar and be flattened I would think. I guess the dancer soars high and then levels off in the air?

Hmmm. Things that make you wonder…

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Terminology Secret #61:
“Temps plané means ‘time soared’.”

Quote of the Day:
“Some days... I walk.
Some days... I run.
And on the odd day... I fly.
And when I have a really special day...I soar!”
