Fun Friday Arm Battements

Fun Friday Arm Battements

Yes, there are, unfortunately, arm grand battements. These usually occur during steps like piqué arabesque, where the leg battements and the arm (or arms) do so too. Scary.

No matter how aggressive the legs are, the arms work separately. Their flow of movement is different – more lyrical and often more circular. The arms can be staccato, depending on the step, but dancers must be aware of how much aggressiveness (or not), they put into their port de bras. In the aforementioned piqué arabesque, the arm or arms extend mostly forward, and only slightly up, unlike the much more aggressive upward thrust of the grand battement action of the working leg.

The best way to avoid grand battements of the arms is to be aware of the problem, and use the correct impetus and pathway for the accompanying port de bras.

Ballet Secret #12g:
Avoid “arm battements”.
