Saturday Creating Statute
Ballet steps don’t live in isolation. There are inextricably tied to the steps that occur before them, and after them. I’ve talked about this before.
It really comes down to this: each step creates the next. That means that while dancers perform one step, their mind is no longer on that step, but on the one coming next. That’s because the movement and form of the step they are doing provides the base, the impetus, for the step that follows. And some people say ballet is easy!
This Ballet Statute is easy to understand when it involves linking steps like glissade or chassé, but it applies to every step. For instance, it isn’t just the plié that begins the turn that is a “creation” step, it is also the way a dancer finishes that turn will help create whatever step follows it.
If you are having trouble with a set of steps, break it down two steps at a time and think about how each one creates the other.
