Super Saturday Size
Dancing, especially onstage, requires a large presence. Not
only in facial expressions, or stage presence, but also in amplitude of
movement. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines amplitude as : the quality or state of being ample : fullness, abundance.
That brings us to Ballet
Statute #69: “When in doubt, make it
bigger, not smaller.” This applies to everything - from the fullness
of a port de bras, to a wide balancé, to the distance traveled in a glissade. Pretty much everything.
Steps tend to get smaller when a dancer is uncertain, so be
aware of this whenever doubts descend. And, if you aren’t feeling
overwhelmingly confident, make your movements big anyway. Ballet technique works
much better when the muscles are fully elongated and nothing is tense and
pulling back.
From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #69:
“When in doubt, make it bigger, not smaller.”

“We either make ourselves miserable, or we
make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.”
