Wacky Wednesday Engine
I’ve blogged before about how a plié is the powerhouse of
ballet. Today let’s think about this: a plié is an engine and an air mattress.
That’s right. It is the original multi-tasker.
The engine part is obvious: it powers the step that follows
it, and is critical to the success of that step. Critical. Without a plié, it is difficult, if not impossible, to
perform most steps successfully. If you don’t believe me, try any step (carefully) with and
without a preceding plié and see what you think.
That brings us to the air mattress part. That’s the
cushioning action of every plié that follows a step (especially a jump). No
stuntman would jump out a window without having an air mattress at the bottom
to cushion his fall, and no dancer should land a jump without a plié. Otherwise:
Ouch!
