Wacky Wednesday Bubble

Wacky Wednesday Bubble

Barre etiquette is a critical element of dance training but it is often neglected. Beginners tend to learn unspoken rules by observation. And there are several rules, but probably the most important –from a safety standpoint - is the Barre Bubble.

When dancers stand at the barre, there must be enough space around each individual to allow for a grand battement front, side and back to occur without kicking anyone (or anything). This is often more difficult than it may appear, especially in a crowded room. If space is truly a problem, dancers learn to angle their body in or out from the barre to allow unobstructed movement.

I call this area around each dancer the Barre Bubble. It’s as though there is a bubble surrounding the dancer at all times. This bubble is the size required for all the aforementioned grand battements.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Secret #21ggg:
“Remember the barre bubble.”

Quote of the Day:
“Two bubbles found they had rainbows on their curves. They flickered out saying: "It was worth being a bubble, just to have held that rainbow thirty seconds. “
